Arched stone bridges of Achladochori

In no other Macedonian region can you find so many stone bridges, monuments of another era, unchanged in time, typical examples of our folk architecture, built before the end of the 19th century by locals or Epirus craftsmen!

The Holy Taxiarches or Saint Archangel Bridge, from the name of the adjacent church.

The Agora Bridge, in the center of the village.

The Kucheivets Bridge

The Gkerka or Pikla Bridge. On its western side there is a cross in relief and a built-in plaque with the date 1868.

The Pitsour Bridge. On the east façade, there is a built-in plaque with a relief cross and the engraved abbreviation “IΓ-XS-NI-KA” (Jesus Christ Conquers), as well as the date 1871.

The Samokva Bridge. At a distance of 2 km outside the village, next to the road leading to Sidirokastro.

The remaining 4 bridges are situated on the outskirts of the village on the stream of Belitsa.

The Pechtseta Bridge

The Mouvitsa or Touvoutsitsa Bridge, at a distance of 500 m from the Pechtseta Bridge.

The Kato Bellitsa Bridge. Double arched. The road leading to Serres would pass from that Bridge. The old cobbled road still survives.

Ano Belitsa or Giogola Bridge. It is the largest single-arched bridge in the whole prefecture of Serres, with a length of 23 m, a width of about 3 m, a height of 7 m and an arch span of 13 m, made of limestone and slate. It is situated in a dense forest of plane trees, which make it almost invisible.
