Lake Kerkini National Park
The wondrous world of nature!
A heavenly water world, a unique and at the same time hospitable ecosystem for hundreds of rare and protected flora and fauna species, the wetland of lake Kerkini is a unique and unexpected experience for the visitor.
The “heart” of the wetland is the riverside forest at the northeastern end of the lake. A forest full of willows, in the foliage of which many different species of rare birds of the 300 species that have been recorded to date build their nests.
Apart from the rich avifauna that lives permanently or temporarily in the area, dozens of species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish have been recorded in the wetland of Kerkini.
The area around the lake is also home to the largest population of water buffalo in Greece.

<p class="info-card__text">In all the villages around the lake you will find traditional taverns with delicious local dishes with buffalo meat, wild boar, venison, fish from the lake like carp and trout, desserts made with fragrant buffalo butter and ice cream made with buffalo milk!</p>

<p class="info-card__text">Lake Kerkini National Park is ideal for bird watching, all year round. Get the right equipment - binoculars, and a telephoto lens for your camera -, and choose a quiet and secluded watching spot. In spring you are likely to see more bird species, in autumn, however, you’ll have the opportunity to admire spectacular flamingos, wild geese and ducks!</p>

In the beautiful little harbors of Kerkini, Mandraki and Lithotopos, you will find professional boats that offer tours and guided tours to the riparian forest.</p>

<p class="info-card__text">At the lakeside area of Kerkini we encounter the largest population of water buffalo in Greece! According to tradition, the ancestors of the current water buffalo population arrived in the area carrying the supplies of the troops of Xerxes through the Strymonas river, at the time of the Persian king’s campaign against the Greeks. Ancient sources also mention that this place was inhabited by boars, deer, bears, bulls, lynxes and lions!</p>

<p class="info-card__text">You can easily go around the lake by car or motorbike, starting from different points. For the tour of the lake, don’t forget to bring binoculars for bird watching. For the more adventurous ones, take the tour around the lake by bicycle or on horseback! The “horse guides” at the harbors of Kerkini and Lithotopos will suggest unique and safe routes, for an unforgettable experience!</p>
