Lake Kerkini dam - Lithotopos
Lake Kerkini dam - Lithotopos
Lake Kerkini, as we know it today, was created with the construction of a dam in 1932, in order to hold back the waters of the Strymonas river, gradually transforming the small marshy lake of the past into the present-day landscape of magnificent beauty.
Since then, the semi-mountainous village of Lithotopos, built on two hills at the foot of Kroussia mountains, at the exact point of the construction of the dam, has been overlooking this area of amazing natural beauty.

Lithotopos has an important alternative tourism infrastructure and is a base for sports activities all year round.
The Ecotourism Promotion Office is also located here to provide information to visitors who can also admire the beautiful exhibits of birds, plants and insects of the wider area that the Office displays in its permanent exhibition.
